This is What Happens to Your Body When You Don’t Wash Your Bed Sheets. I Won’t Be Putting It Off Anymore!

Although their main use is for sleeping, we don’t just sleep in our beds. We eat in them while watching TV, cuddle with our partners or let our pets roam free on them every day. We spend more than 50 hours in bed weekly only on sleeping, and this number can easily go up if we do other activities in it, which means that we spend a big part of our life in our beds.

The smell of fresh sheets on the bed is simply amazing, but let’s be honest – how frequently are you washing and changing your sheets? No one really pays attention to this, so we sleep on the same sheets for more than a month without giving them a wash, which is a big mistake. According to recent studies, not washing the bedsheets is a serious problem which can endanger your health.

Dr. Lisa Ackerley, one of the leaders on the study, says that our body contains a variety of microorganisms which we transfer to our bed every night. This is a normal process and not all of these bacteria are harmful. However, over time they might accumulate and create many problems. In this case, the bed becomes a seeding ground for these germs to multiply and put our health in grave danger.

Here are the most common and dangerous germs found on our bed sheets and how they can affect our health:

Candida albicans

The Candida fungus can easily accumulate in the bed sheets and cause skin and genital infections.

Staphylococcus aureus

This dangerous bacterium can cause lung and skin infections as well as painful urinary tract infections.

Dust mites

The microscopic dust mites feed on our dead skin cells and are not a problem until they multiply out of control. In this case, they may cause asthma and other respiratory problems, especially if you’re allergic to them.

Acne

Changing your pillowcases every 2-3 days is a must if you’re suffering from acne and want to stop them from developing further.

Colds and the flu

If you’ve just went over the flu, you must wash your bedsheets and pillowcases as well in order to prevent the infection from spreading further.

Another thing you should do in order to keep your health in check is to wash your pajamas every couple of days or at least once a week. Stop eating in bed, and don’t allow your pets on it – if you do, at least put a blanket beneath. Keep your bedroom clean in general, and you will prevent various infections.
